Our history

from tradition to action

Five lifelong friends who were seeking to invest in a sustainable project that included direct actions in social and environmental responsibility found this opportunity in tourism in the Amazon Jungle of Loreto, Peru. They chose the awe-inspiring Pacaya Samiria National Reserve and buffer zone as the perfect place for ecotourism as well as ethno-tourism. Working in the amazon jungle, often described as the Earth´s ´lung´, this group of friends knew their project would not only teach recognition and respect for the rural communities, but also have a positive impact on the ecosystem of the entire planet.

They started working in the area in 2008, building an Ecolodge within a 130 hectares (321 acres) plot of land on the left bank of the Marañon River.

The main goal has always been to offer visitors the opportunity to experience and enjoy nature inside the reserve, as well as to meet and interact with its native inhabitants, the Kukama Kukamirias. They are part of the San Jorge Community located very close to the Ecolodge. In order to do this, they designed and implemented ecotourism activities in the reserve, as well as within their own piece of forest, generating employment for the local community members and ensuring their commitment to protecting the existing flora and fauna as well as to value and preserve their culture.

ABOUT US #WEAREpacaya

Our suppliers, coworkers, clients and friends make us proud by calling us the Pacaya Team: it associates our image with that of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, known for the greatest biodiversity and high level of conservation activities (+90% of unaltered forest). We think that calling ourselves the Pacaya Team is due to 3 main factors:

Belonging: We are the only Ecolodge located in the buffering zone of the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. For more than 15 years, we have developed specific goals, and executed detailed management plans showing our commitment and constant support as we feel a great responsibility to the surrounding communities and area.

Communication: Our mission is focused not only on direct conservation but bringing attention to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve as a unique destination. We are using many different types of media, including social, print and broadcast.

Knowledge: We are known inside the tourism industry as the experts on all things Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. We are able to enrich our visitor´s environmental awareness through our understanding of the area and the local communities.

That is why we are the Pacaya Team, #somospacaya #wearepacaya

MEET María Elena

We are lucky to have María Elena in the management of our ecolodge, a nature-loving Amazonian woman with a recognized trajectory in ecotourism in the north-eastern Peruvian Amazon and has contributed the ecotourism dimension to emblematic projects for the environmental and socio-economic sustainability of the area such as the management of aguaje palm trees (Mauritia flexuosa) and yarina (Phytelephas sp. ), management of fishery resources such as paiche (Arapaima gigas) and arahuana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum), and conservation of the river turtle (Podocnemis unifilis). Special mention should be made of the Pua Kamatawara project, which has facilitated the technification of women artisans in the San Jorge Community and has promoted the creation of the Committee of Women Artisans in the area, generating a sustainable activity that has favored the conservation of their natural environment and generated greater economic income.

Currently María Elena, on behalf of our ecolodge, is supporting the technical team of the NGO World Conservation Society (WCS) in the development of the first pilot ecotourism corridor in the Marañón River basin, whose objective is to favor the economy of the Amazonian villages so that conservation activities are even more profitable than extractive activities. In 2018 María Elena was called as a councilor of the Provincial Municipality of Maynas to apply her experience to the tourism development of the province. One of her recent achievements is the implementation of the "First Festival of Freshwater Turtles in the Peruvian Amazon", a multisectoral project of great diffusion at the national level, which convened public and private institutions, professionals and volunteers in order to raise awareness in society regarding the conservation of endangered species.

María Elena is one of the most qualified voices in the Peruvian Amazon regarding ecotourism and has participated as a speaker at various specialized events in Peru and abroad.
