DAY 1: ...... (LIMA) / IQUITOS / PACAYA SAMIRIA AMAZON LODGE (L-D)

  • We start our adventure of the Peruvian forest at the Iquitos City Airport, from there we will transport in a modern and comfortable air-conditioned minivan traveling on a nice highway to the town of Nauta, the first township founded by the Spanish at the Marañón River’s bank. The trip takes approximately 1.30 hours, a 97 km journey.
     

  • In Nauta, we next travel by lodge-owned boats to visit the Ucayali and Marañón River, where the Amazon River is born; from here we have a spectacular sight of the forest viewed from the height of a 100 foot high watching tower, where we are free to take magnificent photographs and videos of the immense Amazon River. The visitors will maybe observe Herons, birds of prey and various other birds that make their homes on the shores of the river, we will have an opportunity to see the Black Skimmers, next we will go on with our trip to the lodge for lunch.
     

  • After a recovering rest, we will walk by footpaths on the surroundings of the lodge and will go up to the viewpoint, an ideal place to observe birds on the canopy of the trees. We will look for observing the Paradise Tanager, Hooded Tanager, Opal-crowned Tanager, Masked Crimson Tanager, Pen--throated Cotinga, and several species of Flycatchers. Parrots like the Canary-winged Parakeet, Short-tailed Parrot and luckily, Blue-and-Yellow Macaw
     

  • Dependant on nigh time climate conditions, we will make an excursion by boat to observe night animals and insects; also enjoyable is hearing the various sounds that comes from the forest, later we will be back to the lodge for dinner and resting.

DAY 2: LODGE / PACAYA SAMIRIA NATIONAL RESERVE / LODGE (B-L-D)

  • At dawn, we will make a small hike through the forest around the lodge, searching for birds to observe, followed by breakfast back at the lodge.
     

  • Immediately after, we will go to the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve where we register our entrance, and then continue out journey into the reserve by the river basin of Yanayacu River recently opened for tourism, an immensely rich zone on birds (there are 449 species properly catalogued) and flora and fauna. It will be possible to observe Pink and Gray Dolphins, Turtles, different species of Primates, Sluggish Bears etc. Besides the birds, we will possibly observe diverse types of Kingfishers, like the Martin Amazon, Ringed-Green Rufous Kingfisher, and the spectacular American Pygmy Kingfisher, Wattled Jacanas and Anhingas. It is possible to observe flocks of Tanagers, Aracari Chesnut-Eared, Woodpecker Crimson-Crested, Cotinga Spangled, Lemon-Throated Barbet, Jacamar White-Eared, Donacobius Black-Cappet. We will sail by lagoons and hidden rivers, we’ll walk through open footpaths in the forest searching for the Horned Screamer, Black Collared Hawk, Jabirut Storks, Woodstorks, Roseate Spoonbill, Piedlapwing and many others more.
     

  • At noon, we will have our box lunch in the shadow of the great trees of the forest. In the evening, we will continue with the search of birds like the endemic Black Tailed Antbird, Black Necked Network Cotinga, Gray Cheeked Nunlet, Lettered and Ivori-billed Aracaris, Bar-breasted Piculet, Black Bushbird Rofous Capped, Antthrush, Tropical Gnatcatcher and the Yellow billed Jacamar among others.
     

  • After all our activities we will be back to the loge for dinner and resting.

DAY 3: LODGE / NAUTA CAÑO / LODGE (B-L-D)

  • At dawn, we will make a small hike through the forest around the lodge, searching for birds to observe like maybe Tinamous, White-throated Tinamou, Great Tinamou, Cinereous Tinamou, Little Tinamou and other birds like Yellow-headed Caracara, White-eyed Parakeet, Dusky headed Parakeet, Canary-winged Parakeet, Cobalt-winged Parakeet, Tui Parakeet, Short-tailed Parrot, and other.
     

  • Next we will back for breakfast to the lodge, after that we will take a boat to navigate down the Marañón River where we will concentrate on some bird species which habitat on the river islands, next we will cross the river to enter the creek of Nauta Caño, a zone rich in birds like the Ivory-billed Aracari, Wattled Jacanas and Anhingas. On the bordering trees, is probably observe mixed flocks of Tanagers, Chesnut-eared Aracari, Ruddy-tailed Flycatcher, Yellow-margined Flycatcher,Boat-billed Flycatcher, Dusky-chested Flycatcher, Sulphur-bellied Flycatcher, and different kind of Woodcreepers like Long-Tailed Woodcreeper, Wedge-billed Woodcreeper, Buff-throated Woodcreeper, Ocellaced Woodcreeper, among others.
     

  • Upon the return and if time allows it, we will wait for the rise of the moon, on the horizon upon the waters of the Marañón River. It’s a wonderful spectacle, mainly in Full Moon, next we will go back to the lodge for dinner and resting.

DAY 4: LODGE / RIVERBANK VILLAGE / IQUITOS / .....(LIMA) (B-L)

  • At dawn, we will make a small hike through the forest around the lodge, searching for birds to observe, followed by breakfast back at the lodge.
     

  • Later, we will visit a riverbank village to observe the lifestyle and daily activities of the people, such as hunting, gathering, fishing or agriculture; we can also collaborate with the community development buying typical souvenirs hand made by the natives, made of seeds and a vegetable ivory called tagua.
     

  • Immediately after lunch we go out to the Iquitos City Airport, ready to board our flight back to Lima City - or transfer to your selected hotel in Iquitos City.


CHECK LIST

Climate: The climate in the Reserve is tropical, warm and humid with minimum temperatures of 72º F (22º C) and maximum temperatures that can reach up to 88º F (28º C), except for the month of June in which the temperature can drop abruptly due to the action of the cold fronts that come from the Argentinean Patagonia. Generally, dawns and nights in the jungle tend to be fresh. It can rain on any day of the year, being showers more frequent between the months of February and May.

Vaccinations: It is recommended to be vaccinated against yellow fever; however it is not mandatory.

  • Raincoat.
  • Cap or hat.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Binoculars.

  • Sunscreen lotion.
  • Mosquito repellent with 35% DEET.
  • Personal medicines.
  • We recommend to bring one piece of luggage and to limit its weight to 15 kg (32 pounds).
